of　course　somebody　has　to　pay　the　taxes；　but　I　do　not　find　them　exciting。　I　am　fascinated　by　the　men；　few　enough　in　all　conscience；　who　take　life　in　their　own　hands　and　seem　to　mould　it　to　their　own　liking。　It　maybe　that　we　have　no　such　thing　as　free　will；　but　at　all　events；　we　have　the　illusion　of　it。　At　a　cross　road　it　does　seem　to　us　that　we　might　go　either　to　the　right　or　the　left　and；　the　choice　once　made；　it　is　difficult　to　see　that　the　whole　course　of　the　world’s　history　obliged3　us　to　take　the　turning　we　did。

你們有些人聽任一些不幸的誤會年復一年地繼續存在，打算將來有一天再去澄清；你們有些人聽任一些可憐的爭執繼續為害，因為你們不能現在就下定決心犧牲自己的自尊，消除那些爭執；你們有些人在大街上遇見某些人的時候，由於某種愚蠢的怨恨，故意不同他們講話，但是你們自己心裡也知道，如果在明天早晨聽說其中的某個人離開了人世，自己的心中一定會充滿羞愧和悔恨之情；你們有些人吝惜一句感激或同情的話，因而使朋友在痛苦中等待——只要你們突然間知道、看到或感覺到“人生苦短”，那你們的心胸就會豁然開朗，不再沉迷於那些無謂的計較，你會馬上去做一些如果現在不做以後也許就永遠沒有機會去做的事情。
